Well, I look confused. Playing drums after 48 beers should probably be forbidden. Also I should check out your blog more... some pretty cool stuff here.

<strong>Nah, you were fine. Played well too. And it wasn't more then 58 beers.</strong>

Hello, I'm not sure if you remember my name, it's Ronald Payne & I'm not sure of who you are...but I do remember this incident. I was in fact the BT who shut off the main steam, I then hurried topside & he was already up on deck when I got there. I have tried to remember his name myself all these years & it has not come to me either. I find it 'weird' & really strange also that a person can't remember a friends name like that. I have thought over the year's that maybe it's because of the trauma of seeing all that happen & to someone you know.
Do you remember one of the merchant ships that was in the bay, it had people hanging from the mast & covered with bags or something? Also, do you remember the guy on the Mike 8 boat that was tied along beside our ship the morning after the storm? The cable snapped & he was cut in 1/2, & I don't remember his name either. Do you remember this incident & who this person was.

Thanks for any info you may have or remember.
Hope your enjoying your RV'ing.

Ronald S. Payne

<strong>Sorry, Ron, you seem to remember more then I do. I do not remember a nearby merchant ship with people hanging from the mast. Was that in DaNang Harbor? Were the people dead?

I don't remember anyone cut in half. I do remember dropping anchor off of Japan just a couple weeks before we went to Vietnam, in fair weather but heavy seas. During that exercise, or off loading work party, a heavy nylon rope parted 6-8 feet above a guy who just relieved me at the job of keeping the boat (landing craft) tied to the ship (do you remember how hard that was???). The boat went down a swell when the ship went up. The rope parted and hit him full in the face...he was off loaded, went to a hospital in Japan, then was shipped back to the US. Happened within a 1/2 hour of him relieving me. I had tarried for a few minutes before leaving him alone because he didn't seem to know how to do the job well and I gave him some pointers. One reason I remember the incident I suppose. The captain kept us posted about his situation, last thing I remember the captain telling us is that he would not be back, and the reconstructive surgery he would have to undergo was substantial. I didn't know that particular sailor.

I will say that your name seems familiar to me. Did you use to play pinochle and/or Tonk during our off times? Didn't I tell you that you should be a dentist, because of your last name?

Keep in touch, Ron! Best wishes, Jim.</strong>

Jim, the Babe Magnet!

Hey, you're catching up; only 4 months behind on the blog. Must have some free time up there in Alaska.

I don't mind seeing the Bounder pix - gives perspective on where it's been, and especially nice parks I might want to camp in one day.

<strong>Yeah, I can attract them, but can't get them to stick around long enough. Or to do anything other then talk. I'm sick of talk.

Yeah, it's quieted down for me somewhat here so I'll have more time to get posted more often.

Oh, thanks for telling me that. I was a little worried that my readers would get sick of seeing the Bounder, happy to hear it adds perspective.</strong>

Nice shots of my home country, Portland, though I hate driving downtown. They keep changing street configurations and dinking with transportation system down there, so I never know what I'm driving into. MAX is easy enough, though not usually as fast as driving, is no longer cheap, and some riders are weird. But that's true in every city. The smog downtown never has been good for my mild asthma, but again, that's true for most bigger towns. They're always working on some project, too - like now the Broadway Bridge is closed for 3 months for streetcar addition, the I-205 bridge is being worked on, and they want to rebuild the I-5 Interstate Bridge as a toll bridge. It never ends.

Is umbrella man offering help, or is he flagging a cab?

Never been in Saks since they came to town, but it sure looks like the inside of the Galleria. ?

Good shot of the old Meier and Frank building and Pioneer Square.

Hey, Dude. Are you ever gonna catch up to your present-tense Alaska on this blog?

<strong>Pretty sure I read somewhere that umbrella man is offering to help someone.

Saks is much more expensive. First time I ever saw a man's dress shirt under glass because it was so expensive was in a Saks. I liked taking women in there and showing them dinner dresses. Most in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. Luckily none felt they needed a dress like that. Not even for the opera.

Present tense? In the grand scheme of the age of the universe I'm so close as to be in the instant-tense by comparison. Then there is the fact that I lost all those pictures, the computer died, rebuilt it, hard drive died, replaced it, recovered missing pictures, and on and on. Finally, there is the fact that it could be pretty boring here this winter...I won't know till we get there...so I'm stretching out my trip.</strong>

Too bad you could not camp up top,it is really beautiful. Sorry about the fee. Our state government is wacko. 32% of the countries welfare recipients don't cha know. Got to pay for it some how.

<strong>That would have been fun. Maybe someday they'll put an RV park up there. But I'm guessing that they will never lower prices now that they've gotten them so high, so I'm pretty sure I won't be staying there.</strong>

What sucks is this confounded rain! It usually takes all of June to get 4" of it, but we got over 3" in the first 5 days!! Thank goodness a dry spell looms after Thursday. Haven't even been able to plant the garden - veritable mudhole since April. At least Alaska is cloudy a lot, but not a slogfest like this year in Oregon.

Hope to see ya next year. Hang the sun out for us.

Wow, no RV problems all the way up. How'd that happen?

You lucked out twice, Dude... Oregon's weather for the last month really sucks. Almost ceaseless rain. Been a long time since I've seen it so incessant. Making up for the dry March I reckon.

Hope ya have a great summer up there, and wish we were there. Been threatening to take the Beaver coach to Alaska since our month-long stay after the trip up via the cruise ship in 2003. The buscuit burner's nephew has a B&B at Soldotna/Kenai. He and his missus went on the cruise with us and got hooked, so went back up and bought some land on the river and have been building ever since. Gotta love that Kenai River sockeye run!!

The recession has squeezed our finances to where we've considered selling the coach, as we can't even afford to drive it (been stuck at home since October 2008); so we may never fulfill our dream of taking the rig up, but if we do it will be in 2011 (assuming fuel prices don't skyrocket). If so, and you're there then, we'll try to connect.

Joel and Lee,
Clackamas

<strong>That sucks Joel. I saw the economy crash coming six years ago and my neighborhood had become very popular so I had the opportunity to bail. I still have two years to wait 'till I can officially retire and start drawing SS. To be able to last that long without income I have some friends up here that help me out. And I work here at the park for them. I will be here the summer of '11 since I've decided to stay here for two years plus. Come on up and visit!</strong>

Sorry to hear about the pics. Maybe that means you have to repeat the adventure and document it all over again!

<strong>Boy, I don't know if I'll ever go to California wine country again. :) But then again, not a bad idea!</strong>

We have changed our layout from a link page to a RV blog network. Please take some time to check out the new design at http://www.rvthereyet.cc/blog
We are displaying your feeds with the many other blogs in the network and creating a dynamic presentation on the fly. You don't have to do anything but to keep on blogging. The tags you label your post with are combined with tags from other blogs as well. So someone can click on a "Arizona" tag and be shown all the blogs that deal with Arizona.
If you do not wish to be part of the network, please contact me from RVThereYet, and I will remove your blog.
I would appreciate any feedback you may have to offer. We are just getting started, so it a work in progress that I hope will be a benefit to the RVing community at large and every RVing blogger that want to participate.

Jim: the epitomy of the term, "Snowbird". Mexico to Alaska, Alaska to Mexico. Watch yourself when migrating across Arizona.

You take a lot more photos than I ever do. But I have a large capacity CF card in my camera, and a couple smaller reserve cards. That large card has a couple of years of pix on it, so I'd never have a problem if the computer went belly up (and it did last year).

I also have a WD Passport Elite external backup drive that actually holds the bulk of "My Pictures", and have been known to burn them to disks just in case. We now have a Vista laptop for traveling in the motorhome, in addition to the old desktop, and I put new photos on both machines, not storing on CD or DVD disks anymore. With all that backup, I'll never have the problem you did.

You should consider at least one of those options, esp. an external backup drive. The included software can automatically backup any new data (including pix) you add to your computer, or you can buy software that copies (essentially takes a picture of) your computer's hard drive to the external one, so you can easily restore both data, programs, and configuration to the old internal or a new drive after reformatting. My WD Passport Elite's software copies only data, not programs, so I had to reinstall one at a time all my programs when my XP went belly up last year; but the data was safe and accessible from the little Elite once the programs were active.

Can't say I'm all that enthused with WD (Western Digital) though, for support and user-friendliness, and would consider a Seagate next time.

Good to know you're back online.

<strong>I have a method of backup I've used for years, I do a 'Files & Settings Transfer' and a full XCopy to a 2nd HDD in my computer. Then I unplug it until the next backup. But in this case, I'd just changed mobo, CPU, and power supply, installed WinXP Home, was anxious to get back on-line, and had downloaded all the pixs. I had all my old files on the backup HDD, except those new pixs. Then over a few days the computer got slower and slower. Until out of frustration, I reformatted the HDD and reinstalled XP and SP3 in a different order (which took care of the speed problem). The pictures were the only thing I forgot to copy to a thumb drive. Nothing else was a problem. Damn my impatience!</strong>

You take a lot more photos than I ever do. But I have a large capacity CF card in my camera, and a couple smaller reserve cards. That large card has a couple of years of pix on it, so I’d never have a problem if the computer went belly up (and it did last year).

I also have a WD Passport Elite external backup drive that actually holds the bulk of “My Pictures”, and have been known to burn them to disks just in case. We now have a Vista laptop for traveling in the motorhome, in addition to the old desktop, and I put new photos on both machines, not storing on CD or DVD disks anymore. With all that backup, I’ll never have the problem you did.

You should consider at least one of those options, esp. an external backup drive. The included software can automatically backup any new data (including pix) you add to your computer, or you can buy software that copies (essentially takes a picture of) your computer’s hard drive to the external one, so you can easily restore both data, programs, and configuration to the old internal or a new drive after reformatting.
