As I said last post, I was pretty disappointed that the Turtle Rock RV Park has such screwed up WiFi. Annoyingly frustrating to find such a perfectly positioned park near a bar and a brewery, with great facilities, and be chased off by their lack of equipment maintenance and the staffs insistence that everything was OK.
The day before I left that park, I strolled around to get a few pictures. It really is nice here. Wish I could have stayed. This next shot is of the ocean’s incursion up Hunter Creek. It’s a tidal creek.
This is one of the RV parks rental cottages. They had several of them and they were all very nice, at least from the outside. They also had hot tubs at some of the cottages, AND, at some of the RV sites. That’s pretty unique. I’ve not seen that at many RV parks in my travels.
This is the 101 bridge over the estuary and Hunter Creek. And the ocean beyond. And a nice little foot path, so you can walk to the ocean beaches. Off in the distance, looking North, is more of Gold Beach proper. Later in the day, this was a Monday, I headed over to the Hunter Creek Bar & Grill. The locals call it The Tav. And here’s a view just outside and behind the Tav. Taken from it’s smoking area. Sort of an open porch type deal. It’s right next to Hunter Creek. They get flooded out occasionally as storms roll in coupled with high tides. And of course what with Global Warming and the ocean sea level raising, it’s going to be happening more and more often here. The map from that link above, if you zoom out, will show you how close The Tav is to the ocean. And it’s not more than a couple feet above the average ocean level as it is.
Looking upstream…And downstream…that fence right there surrounds the backyard of the next door microbrewery. See, they’ve got lot’s of TV’s. But, they’re closed Sunday mornings! Prolly go to church or something stupid. Had a good evening. Dinner was very good. They have a good beer, an IPA, on tap from that brewery right next door named Arch Rock Brewery. Their other two beers on tap were nothing to talk about. Watched a bit of the Monday Night Football game. Did not care much about either team so left before the game ended.
While I was sitting at the bar, enjoying a brew, a pretty young woman sat next to me a soon we were having a conversation. When she found I was a traveler, asked if I’d done the Rogue River jet boat tour. No, but it was why I was there in Gold Beach. She was pretty sure they only ran a couple more days, and so convinced me to let her help get it set up for me. Well, turns out she knew someone that works there, called them, and got me a 10% discount while making a reservation for the last day the boats run. Cool.
So next afternoon at 2pm, after staying for 5 nights, I headed back into town. I’d been able, between WiFi dropouts, to research parks and found one right downtown that when I called and explained why I was moving, they were pretty certain that staying there would be much better. No constant drop out of the WiFi throughout the day, they assured. A bit more expensive but, can’t have everything. So, off I went.
Heading right for the ocean & US-101.
Since I was only 1.3 miles away, didn’t take long to arrive at the new RV park. This is Ireland’s RV Park. One of the interesting things is that there’s no office here. You have to choose your spot, park, walk back up the hill you entered by and then north 1/4 mile along the 101 highway. And not to the Ireland’s Rustic Lodges office but further on to Gold Beach Inn. Kind of a strange setup.
Tried to park in any of several of their pull through spaces but the turns are sharp, so not that easy to negotiate, for me anyway. Kept getting my paint scraped by stiff oceanside stunted trees too. So finally just decided to back in park instead at an easier space. Nice and flat. Landing gear down, plug in, and 15 minutes later I’m testing the WiFi. Hmm. Nice and fast. So I go to Netflix and start a movie. An hour later, it’s still playing, hasn’t skipped a beat. No dropouts or stutters at all. All the while I’m checking out my emails and Facebook. Yeah! Beautiful. Oh, the day is beautiful too. Shut down the computer and head off for a walkabout of the park. They have a neat little lighthouse.I’ve read that this park is packed during the summer season but now in October it’s fairly quiet. Several empty spaces. Oh, there’s the WiFi antenna. I’ve got a nice straight shot from my dinette window where my computer resides. And their little lighthouse. No light in it of course, it’s just for show, but it does give you a nice high vantage point for pictures. There’s my RV with the door latched open. There’s a nice looking empty space. And another hotel due south. There’s the ocean. Not so calm today. Saw some pretty big waves come crashing in. Followed this nice path down to the sea, not today though. It’s a little chilly today. Way over there is the Gold Beach Inn where you sign in for your RV spot.
So after I got all settled, I got ready for tomorrow’s adventure on the Rogue River by checking info online.
I’ll ride my bike over to Jerry’s Jet Boat’s tomorrow and that trip will be the subject of the next posting…see you then!
