Windshield Washer Tank…

The windshield washer has not worked since I bought this RV in ’16, and I figured it was time to finally do something about it. In this RV the tank is right inside and below the front cover, held in place with 4 large bolts holding it to a metal plate. Right behind and a bit below that cover that says ‘Journey DL’ in this picture.

Seemed a bit overly strong the way it was put together, but, whatever. The electrical connector was easily removed and a quick voltage test showed that voltage was reaching the motor, but no water was pumped out.

So, checked Amazon online for a universal. Last time I got one of those for my ’94 Bounder back in ’12, it was only $8.95, this time it’s $17.25. Jeese, just about double in price. Virtually the same piece of equipment. But an OEM tank would have been over $100 so considerable savings. I also checked for just a pump that might adapt to my old tank but the problem there is that they are practically the same price as the universal which comes with a tank, pump, screws and bolts, and tubing so it made more sense ordering the universal kit rather than just a pump.

Well, anyway, soon had the universal kit and once I got the old tank with attached pump off, I could see the pump motor and housing was badly rusted and grungy looking…no wonder it wasn’t working. First problem was the mounting setup for the new universal was way different then the one I was replacing, but the kit provided a mounting plate with bolts and sheet metal screws. Drilled a couple holes in the original mounting plate, screwed down the new mounting plate with two sheet metal screws, slipped the molded slots in the tank over the mounting plate’s matching wings until it clicked into place and boom, done. The original connector was cleaned with contact spray, attached to the new pump, the old hose looked good enough that I reused it and saved the new hose. There was a manufacturing wound on the side of the tank that showed a discoloration (but no hole that I could see) that went all the way through the plastic so I slapped on some water resistant tape and hopefully, I won’t get a fatigue leak there.

And here it is all installed. First test went well and it worked perfectly. So now I’ll be able to wash those dead bugs off the front windshields.

I reattached the old bolts and tightened them down, never know when I might need some nice big bolts like those.
