More from San Felipe…

This would be my 3rd month in San Felipe. And the weather is just perfect. There’s usually a nice breeze off the ocean and every day it gets up into the 70 F range while only dipping into the 50s at night. I usually need to run my AC system from around 10 AM until 4 PM, and the heat pump on overnight set at 69 F. Palms swaying in the breeze, seagulls and other sea birds hanging around, scull boats out in the ocean, tides in and out. Nice.

Speaking of scull boats, there’s a scull boat racing team here in the small village of San Felipe and I often see them out in the bay a half mile offshore rowing the ~4 miles back and forth in the bay. Single, two man, four man sculls. Sometimes they’re racing but usually it’s individual efforts to go as fast as possible. Usually they’re out there 3-4 times a week at high tide. Yesterday the news came out that two of those rowers had been picked for the Mexican national team for the Olympics. Cool.

EDIT: This evening, I see several scullers out on the sea but they’re using their bright white sculls and it looks like they are 4-6 man boats around 25 feet long. But they each have just 2 rowers. As a result of the increased weights they’re getting too tired it seems, and ship their oars to rest before the turn. I can also hear an announcer over the loud speakers in the central area so I think there’s some public interest now that 2 of them are on the national team. They had gotten too far away for any decent pictures.

One day decided to head south to South Beach. Haven’t been there in years. Here’s the google map showing San Felipe, and the south beach area is where the San Felipe Marina Resort is.

Heading out to join MX-5 up the road a mile or two.

After swinging onto MX-5, and driving a couple miles with no buildings, we reach this. These are the condos that get built during the boom years, and often end up unfinished and vacant when they can’t find enough buyers. Which happens often with a tourist based economy.

Across the street is thousands of acres of unpopulated land…all sand.

Nice view of the ocean, er, sea I mean.

Looking inland again. Better picture actually.

My RV is over there somewhere.

One of the big resorts. Starting to look a little worn due to lack of buyers and deferred maintenance. Still, there are some owners in residence as evidenced by the cars in their driveways.

Turned back a couple miles beyond and returned. This is one of the empty buildings. What’s strange is that just beyond it there was a new multi-story building being constructed. Why? Seems like a way to dodge taxes with unused and unsold buildings in tourist designated areas?

I’ve been down to the marina with a member before and it’s like most of the built up stuff in this area, looking sad with very few customers.

And then I get back near where I’m staying and this building is the same as always. Unoccupied, unfinished. Been this way since I first started coming to San Felipe more than 4 years ago.

And that was my visit to South Beach. As you can tell, the highway doesn’t get very near the Sea. There are beach side places to drive down to with small palapas with shade and picnic tables. This time of year they’re empty. There are also really old RVs hanging to the sides of hills facing the Sea with attachments and roof coverings suggesting they’ve been there for decades. Kinda fun touring that area and calculating how it would be to buy something out there.

Last post one of the readers asked for my shots of the beach. So here they are. This is on the beach above high tide area in front of the RV park I stay at…looking towards the downtown area.

And over there is South Beach.

Spinning around, here’s the RV park. The water slides are unwatered this time of year. It’s a summertime thing.

And here’s my RV and towed.

That’s all for today, thanks for reading!

I saw the beaches Jim! So inviting and no crowds.
I guess I should have taken Spanish in High School rather then Latin and French.
Those listings of different ales, the only one that caught my eye was the Peanut Butter one. Hmm no thanks, I like P & B sandwiches, but I don’t think Ale would be too tasty.
Am I able to send you a picture at Jim@HiTek? Is that your “E” mail?

Yeah, I wouldn’t be drawn to peanut butter beer either. Thanks for the pics!

We spent a bunch of time in San Felipe in the 70s. Back then it was not much more than a stop sign at the end of the highway, cheap fish tacos and fishing boats grounded when the tide went out. I recall seeing an eclipse while camped on the beach, amazing experience. We stopped going when the ugly gringo factor got too strong.

Dunno about any ugly gringo factor…maybe out north in the El Dorado area? I stay in town, just a few blocks from the malecon and haven’t noticed any issues with gringos. I imagine it can get a bit like that when the Baja off-road racing teams come to town. I was there for 3 months this trip and it was calm, friendly, and relaxing as always.
