I found a bunch of pictures on my phone I’d forgotten about so I’ll backtrack here.
While in San Felipe, I got some phone pictures of the nearby coffee shop, downtown, of a nice pizza dinner at Pizzeria Alfredos with Roadrunning Rita, and other random bits.
Here’s where I would buy my occasional Mocha coffee, along with a cappuccino for the office gal at the Campo San Felipe RV park where I stayed. It was an easy walk over here and they had excellent coffee ($70 peso or $3.50 for a 16 oz cup). Went at least once per week the entire time I was in SF. I would get one for the office gal because it’s a nice thing to do. I’ve been coming here for years, over a decade, and this scary stairway to the upper floor has been like this, unused, that entire time. Place is never crowded enough to warrant opening the upper area, and this staircase is just too damned unsafe to allow people to climb it. I’m not sure if this was the entire design or if they stopped the welder from finishing it. Curious they’d leave it this way all these years.
Lots of nice pastries. I’ve tried several over the years.
After a nice Mocha I’d often walk over to the malecon and check out the goings on. This was on a Sunday in early February and one of the few times it wasn’t too crowded in downtown. This is just normal weekend type traffic until there’s a Mexican holiday…and there are a lot of those. Sunday’s tend to be busier, this time though traffic was light.
This is the main drag that goes all the way up to MX5 which crosses N-S just slightly west of town. Down a block and right on the corner is where Fat Boy’s bar and grill is where I watch Seahawks games.
Traffic picked up a little.
Really nice beaches here. This is a seashore shelf in that the water doesn’t get very deep going out 100’s of yards. And when the tide goes out, it’s mainly just sand for nearly a mile. The fishing boats are carted out there by trucks in the early AM and then later, after dark usually, they pick them up while trying to not get caught by the incoming tide. I’ve seen them up to the engine compartment in seawater caught by the tide before they winch in their boat. I’ve also seen them stall and another truck rushes out, attaches to their bumper and drags them back to the boat ramp. Kinda strange seeing truck headlights out in the water late at night. But they fish when they can and return when they can. I have seen the tide come in so quickly that there were several boats out on the water with no easy way to get to shore…so they just spend the night on their fishing boats. These are open boats maybe 15′ to 25′ long.
Tide is in, and there is often a Coast Guard ship out on the horizon. The draft is so shallow here that’s about as close as they can get.
We don’t get tourist involved crime here much, but there is a cartel presence. The last week I was in SF, a local politician was assassinated for whatever reason, probably related to the ban of fishing of an endangered shark that has a really tall rear fin the Chinese pay big bucks for. But I heard more sirens in Pahrump Nevada in a week than I did in 3 months staying in SF. I never saw or even came near anything scary in SF. Once that assassination happened, suddenly there were 3 Coast Guard ships outside the harbor, roadblocks around town with armed NG soldiers, and NG helicopters cruising over the town several times per day. Like I said, never saw or heard anything to worry about.
One of my internet friends introduced me to one of her friends that just happened to be staying in SF, so she contacted me and we went out for dinner one late afternoon and hung out on the malecon. Than a couple weekends later she returned the favor and bought me dinner at Pizzeria Alfredos. Very good pizza.
Roadrunning Rita.
Not very crowded but we were fairly early…around 5:30 PM.
And this post is all the stories and pics I have this year about San Felipe. One of my favorite Mexican towns to stay at. I’m thinking of going to Mazatlan next winter for some painting on the RV and maybe the car. And I love Mazatlan, great town, lots to do.
I left SF for the US on a holiday Sunday and the border crossing at Mexicali East took 2 hours instead of the typical 1 hour. Than I stayed at Sleepy Hollow RV park outside of Los Algodones for a week, than on north to Pahrump where I am now. More on that next time.
Thanks for reading!
