We go to LV for Xmas!

After Dan & I returned from Seattle, we left the next day (last Wednesday) for Las Vegas. I don’t gamble much but this trip Dan was able to get me into craps for a while…I was up $125 and he was up a couple hundred before we left to go to another casino…where we proceeded to loose all of our winnings plus. I lost $100 and that was enough. Next day I just watched the football games on the big screens while Dan lost another couple hundred. If any of you are going to be in Vegas soon remember where they got the money to build the casinos.

Since there doesn’t seem to be anyway to eliminate the Spam from the comments on this site I’ve turned them off. There isn’t any easy way to delete them all at once either…I have more then 30 pages now and I had to go to each page and delete the spam instead of a ‘Comments’ page that would allow simply deleting of all or some of the comments all at once. If you want to comment please use GoblinBox Rants. Thanks!

I’ve attached some pics of our trip. They are kinda fuzzy and it’s the same kind of camera as mine only it has 3.1MP and mine has 4.0MP…

More Pictures & stuff…

OK, here are some more pics from our trip north. The rocky place is outside of Lone Pine, CA. You may remember it as being the place where literally 100’s of movies have been made. It took me this long to get the pics up because our Uncle Lew passed away and Dan and I drove to Seattle to attend the funeral. We left here (Rosamond, CA) Friday around 9am and arrived at Paul’s house Sat. morning. On the way, we learned that Maria in Walla Walla, a family friend of 30 years, had passed away from brain cancer. I’m truly going to miss her and our visits together. I was lucky enough to have been able to give her a couple trips around the countryside in my RV.

Saturday evening in Seattle, we went to one of Paul’s friend?s houses and Dan and Paul played several hours of poker with friends. Both of them lost money…Dan around $100 and Paul lost $60 in gift money (new father gifts). Sunday we just lounged around or went shopping so Dan could buy some presents. Later we had a great time trying to find studs in the wall so we could put the dartboard up in Paul’s daylight basement game room. In my spare time, I got Paul’s home network up and running on wireless equipment.

Monday we went to the funeral and listened to Lew’s kids and friends describe his life. We all admired and loved Lew…

Tuesday morning we left for CA and arrived here at 2am Wed. morning. Don’t want to travel in Dan’s car again…way too uncomfortable, the seats are too stiff, the heater is skit so, the wipers clatter, the steering is way too tight, it’s too noisy, etc. I’ll try to stick to travel in my RV in the future.

Now that we’re back here in CA, we’ll be heading off for Las Vegas tomorrow for a few days with Dan’s roommate so they can gamble. I’m not much of a gambler myself, I mostly just dabble, so I’ll be wandering around the town most of the time.

Bye!

Mono Lake Pictures

Thanks to Mush for helping me get these pictures up on the blog site!!

Mono Lk 3.jpg

Northwest corner of the lake.

Mono Lk 2.jpg

Notice the big black mound in the middle? That was underwater before LA started stealing the H2O. It was a cinder cone from 12million years ago. Notice the snow in the foreground. But it was a comfortable 64F or so.

Mono Lake.jpg

Swinging the camera to the southeast.

Mono Lk 4.jpg

Even farther around to the southeast…

Mono Lk Spires.jpg

These are spring created spires in the southeast area of the lake that were formed underwater by chemical reaction of the spring water with the highly basic water in the lake…table salt and baking soda. They will be back underwater in a few years as the lake fills. We only saw one working spring in the area though.

Down I-5…

About a week and 2 days ago, I left Gresham, Oregon for points south. I got to the Flying J gas station around 10am and tried to fill up my propane tanks for the fifth time at that station. That day they decided that they couldn’t possibly fill my tanks because there is too much rust on them. W-t-f? They had done it 5 times before! Idiots.

Anyway, since the tanks were 3/4 full anyway, I got my diesel tank topped off and headed down the road. Got to Ashland (yes, where they have the world famous Shakespearean festival every year) around 7:30. There was a downpour going on and I found a waterlogged RV park just off the freeway. Turned out to be filled with hippies and the like. Since one of them had decided to park in front of the space I had rented for the night, it took almost a half hour to be parked right (with help from staff). All night rain came down in sheets pounding on the roof and woke me up at least 4 times.

Next morning I took a walk around the place and found that they also had an organic veggie garden goin’ on. There is also a natural hot spring that feeds their large pool (smells of sulfur) and many damaged ‘improvements’ that were in various stages of completion. Turned out that last year they had a flood that put all their work under several feet of water. Kind of put a halt to improvements for a while. Speaking of water, when I checked in, the counter guy didn’t mention that the water provided at the faucets wasn’t drinkable. Sure glad that the babe helping me park the rig mentioned it. I was going to fill my drinking water tank.

On my way out of Ashland, I went to the nearest gas station and was able to fill my propane tanks without a word about the rust…and it cost me $17 more then if the asshole had done it in Gresham. Butt head.

Headed on down the road (I-5) for another 12 hours until I reached Mohave and my brother’s house in Rosamond. Naturally, he has a house on a steep hill so I’m not able to keep the RV here, I have to park it about a block and a half away on a flat stretch of road. The refer stops working if you put the RV on an angle of 12 or more degrees.

Dan took Friday off and we goofed around for the day doing some yard work he needed done. Then on Saturday we took off in the RV for points north on the 395 hiway. Up into the Sierra Nevada mountains. The road goes past a ghost town (closed for the season) that would have been fun to visit, maybe next year. Further up the road we stopped at Fossil Falls, an ancient river falls, empty now, that must have been pretty cool after the last ice age. It was too dark to take pictures.

Around 8ish we started looking for RV parks and came to one that had an empty space but the office was closed and there were no ‘late arrival’ instructions or means to leave money. Also no ‘assistant manager’ that we could find and the empty space we found needed a fuse from the manager to get any electricity. So, off down the road again. Around 9, we found a RV park that seemed open, had an empty office but did have a map showing where we could park. We bashed through a snow pile, parked, hooked up to electricity, and watched the Zulu movie until bedtime. The space had electric but no water or functioning cable. The place look deserted…none of the trailers around us were occupied. Next morning, found that the public toilets were closed for the season, the office was still empty, and the late arrival payment mailbox had no envelopes. So I dropped a buck in the box and hit the road. Hey, I didn’t get water, cable, sewer or use of the toilet facilities so I figured all it was worth was a buck.

Dan’s lived in this area for years and hikes all the time for fun. Here’s one of the spots he had me stop at as we toured around the Mojave basin.

GOT THE TAGS…

Finally, I got the license plates, tags and title.

But meanwhile, one of my clients ordered two computers, another needed help with a computer disaster and a third had three fans go bad in their computer all at once (I know, weird). So I’ve been making extra money.

Another week and I’ll be off to either Walla Walla, or to California. It’s getting cold here.

See ya!

What to do now?

Well, I’ve gotten the license plate mess cleaned up and they are on their way to my drop mail box, but I still don’t physically have them…all I’ve got is the temp tags, good until Dec. 10th.

Lately I seem to be determined to subconsciously piss off all my friends. Everyone is mad at me lately and I seem powerless to stop it. Perhaps I’ve mentally moved on and don’t know why they haven’t? I guess I have some apologies to make soon.

Peace,

Jim

Waiting for my RV plates.

I’m still here in Gresham waiting for my license plates for the RV. Oh, and my title! My temp tags expire in 2 days. Getting a little nervous about getting a ticket.

Meanwhile, here in Gresham it’s cool and last night my propane turned itself off so I had no heat. Lucky that I have two very comfy and warm blankets for the bed. Found that I must have parked at to much of an angle because when I went to refuel today, the tank that acted empty last night only needed 11 gallons, and it’s a 20 gallon tank.

One of the benefits of the RV is that if I’m at a bar, I won’t always have to leave the parking lot. Friday night the OLCC waltzed into LT’s where I hang out and promptly ticketed Danny the bartender for serving a visibly drunk guy. The cops told the guy if he went outside he’d be arrested for public intoxication. Then the cops picked up someone who knew they were around and tried to drive. Dumb. Anyway, three of my female friends that were in the bar all decided it would be better to stay in my RV then try to drive home. I didn’t get to bed until 4:30. Great time.

Talk to you guys later, with pictures, I hope.

A little bit cooler and I’m gone…

I got my Merc sold for $175, after I put almost $200 into it in the previous week, it wouldn’t pass DEQ and I didn’t want to bother anymore. It’s only worth $400-$500 and a friend really wanted it, otherwise I would have used it as a tax deduction.

I’m in Walla Walla now, sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Got online with my hi-gain wireless antenna onto ‘Enterprise Wireless AP’, whatever/whoever that is. But they don’t have any security so I like them. So I’ve got a free high-speed connection for now. There are 2 other local sites I could use too; one of them is the local grade school.

Tonight I will go and visit my sister and meet the woman she’s been trying to get me to meet for weeks. That will be a kick in the pants, I’m sure. Maybe she speaks Spanish.

My plans will be to start drifting down to Mexico. I’d like to winter there, maybe buy some land and camp out 6-7 months per year.

Just a little cooler…

I’m basically waiting for winter so I can go south. I think I’ve got my car sold, I’ll know later today. It’s having problems so I’ve offered it for $175 (down from $400) since it didn’t pass DEQ yesterday.

In the last several weeks I’ve gone fishing up at Lake Billie Chinook with Gordon and his girl friend, caught 5 Chinook, ate them for dinner (hmmm), made two trips to Walla Walla to visit Maria, got a new muffler while I was there. Got a new refer cooling unit here in Portland, new front tires in Hermiston, and gotten some little things fixed. Came back down through Pendleton and Pilot Rock, spent the night at a small (3 pull through spaces) RV center, the next day I visited the fossil beds in central Oregon, got back on the road and spent the night near the Prineville reservoir. Got back here in Portland a few days ago and I’ve been goofing off since.

Meanwhile, I’ve also gone to Salem for the ‘Bounders Usergroup’ rally. Didn’t stay because it would have cost $200 to join the group ($35) and then the rest was for the rally itself. Didn’t seem to me, after talking to several people and wandering through the vendor area, to be worth $160 or so.

I’m getting the traveling bug again and want to get that car off my hands so I can take a long trip, like down to visit my brother.

But first, damit, I’ve got to get me a camera!

Hit the Road – Easy

Got every thing sold or given away at the house by the 21st of August and got on the road around noon. Went down to Flying J and filled up the tank, headed east on I-84. Four hours later I’m in Walla Walla and it’s getting dark so I stop at the only RV place in Walla Walla. Not bad but over priced for not having wireless internet. Cost was $25 per night.

Made some calls and went over to see Maria the next day. She is interested in going for a little drive about but can’t go for a whole week like I wanted. We settle on 3-4 days. The next day is all about waiting for her nurse to get the prescriptions she needs and order them in little envelopes so she can take them at the right times. Maria has brain cancer that has spread so she’s on a treatment regime that requires all the pills. Since it’s taking so long, I end up in the Wal-Mart parking lot for the night. Comfy.

We get on the road Monday at about 2pm and head northish. Four hours later we pull into the camping spot at Fishtrap lake outside of Spokane. Built in the ’30’s, the buildings are showing their age but the lake is still a beautiful & peaceful place. Steep walled canyon, volcanic, with a lake in it (duh…) of about 3 miles by 2 miles. The owner raises buffalo on the rim so we bought T-bone steaks for dinner. Yummy. That night and into the next morning is rains like crazy, so no fishing.

Next day we head for the Grand Coulee Dam. The weather clears up some but it’s cloudy and cool…just how I like it. Not much to say about the dam, it’s huge but basically uninteresting. Hit the road and headed for Dry Falls, which was the worlds largest falls 16,000 years ago but is dry now. Now this was interesting, so we spent about 2-3 hours going over the exhibit and looking at the view. Really neat stuff.

Next we headed for Moses Lake and points south. Traveled along a river for a while, can’t remember it’s name. Stopped south of Moses Lake and spent the night in a camp ground. Not much happening there but there was a lot of long-term stay overs at the park that had really dug into the place. Even had their own lawn mowers and yard tools. Didn’t get a chance to ask any why they seemed to like the place so much…must be contractors.

The following day we head back towards Pasco and Walla Walla. Some interesting ground to see and we did find a roadside farm fruit stand that had delicious apples and stuff. Back on the road, I start wiping the apple off on my pants and Maria says, “You should wash that”. I don’t want to stop the rig for that so I just wipe. Later that day, I see the lead article in the paper is that local farmers have been using a banned spray on their apples despite the ban, because it works so well to stop a fungus…the spray is also known to cause lung cancer. Other then that not much to much excitement or things to see.

We get into Walla Walla late in the day, and go visit Maria’s mother on the family farm. They have a 50 year old fuel tank on the property that has about 100 gallons of gas buried underground that hasn’t been touched in 30 years. The fuel is rotten, smells like turpentine. And the tank is 100 yards from an artesian well and 100 feet from a neighbor’s pumped well. So the next day I call and leave a message for the EPA. They call me back and say, “There are no local or national laws that cover that. It would be hard to get a loan on the property when they sell, oh, and they could be sued by their neighbors if the tank leaks, but no laws to worry about”. Hmmm.

I spent the next 4 days up at Gordon’s above lake Billie Chinook. Now I’m in Gresham.
