Friends and neighbors…

Hanging around San Felipe, and wandering around downtown has it’s merits but being neighborly is fun too. So nearly every afternoon at 4 I’d join the crew at the RV park to just sit around and gab under a palapa. That gets tiresome to me after a few days so I tend to only join them 2-3 days a week rather than 5-6 like most did. I did help out one couple with their printer and while talking they heard I play so they invited me along to play golf the next time they went out to El dorado Golf Course around 8 miles north of town. Remember last year when I bought that set of clubs here in SF for $13? Got some rounds in over the last year and as it happens, the clubs are just right for me. Getting many good shots out of that set. My old accidentally brought together set of thrift store clubs wasn’t that great to use and my scores were awful back years ago when I played. Now with my new set, my scores are still awful, but I get some better shots off the tee and it’s more enjoyable now. Plus the exercise.

Anyway, we went out to the course and played a round. The cost is $20 which includes 9 holes and a golf cart. Not a bad way to spend most of an afternoon.

Sue and Mike getting their clubs organized.

The homes are smack dab right up against the fairways. Most of them are empty, unsold. Lots of sandy soil and sickly looking grass but…it plays OK. It’s hard to lose your ball because there’s no long grass. We had a nice lunch at the clubhouse afterwards and even with the carts, it was a good workout. I noticed that the trips between tees and holes were so long that a golf cart was kinda necessary, for me at my age anyway.

Later that day, one of our neighbors at the campground had taken a flight on this ultralight and landed on the beach. Only $25 US per flight.

Here’s the pilot…note how he was bundled up against the cold air at altitude this afternoon in December.

These guys, the Marines, would come by for a drive through about once a week, this time they came by and parked for an hour. Not a big deal, actually we like to see them.

Tried to get a picture of the overcast skies we’d been having for several days. It was getting to be a bit depressing. Can’t hardly see the sea what with all the foggy skies and all.  Had a very nice Turkey Day. I hadn’t heard from any of the neighbors about any get together at the RV park so I checked the local grocery stores for a small turkey. Unfortunately, there were no ‘small’ turkeys of 6-8 lbs to be had. Sure, there were lots of 12-16 lb turkeys available but I didn’t want to bother with sawing up that big of a bird again. Too much work and then my freezer is to small. But I did find a precooked whole chicken at the Calimax store. Cooked perfectly, skin all nice and brown, meat tender, juicy. Wow, was it good. Big enough that it lasted for several meals and lunches. And I didn’t have to do anything to it except carve it. I could tell by taste it was low salt too. Just what I wanted. When xmas rolled around made sure I got another one. Same high quality as last time. Yum.

So now I have a new way to enjoy the T-Day and Xmas holiday dinners…with a whole cooked chicken instead of going to the bother of a home cooked turkey.

So that’s the end of my year 2017. I did get invited out for a New Years party at a local restaurant but I don’t usually spend the night out on new years eve. Just not my thing. Declined the offer mainly because of the loud music that was scheduled to be at the venue and just stayed home. Went to bed early.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the tip on the roasted chicken at Calimax, we’ve picked up the half chicken at Tikiriki, on the Malecon, which is quite good and right off the grill. Is the El Dorado golf open to the public? I thought it was for deed/lease holders and perhaps their guests.

I wish Calimax was consistent with the roasted chicken, a week after xmas they were all out and acted like they wouldn’t get any more. Except maybe, “someday”.

Yes, the El Dorado is a public golf course. You just go to the main gate with the fountain and tell them you want to golf and they let you through.

A friend mentioned a new place in town whose specialty is roasted chicken to-go. John says it’s the best, but we have no experience with it. Sorry I do not recall the name nor location.

We gave up our membership in El Dorado years ago, so have not paid much attention to what goes on there. Thank’s for the info.
