Hanging out around Hagerman…

Just a short post about Hagerman and environs nearby. Several things about the town I like that involve bike riding. There are several halfway strenuous hills I can ride up every day, there’s a couple of interesting bars with grills. One is Wilson’s Club. Nice older bar where I was hanging out one afternoon and a slightly tipsey young women comes in and heads straight for me. Wants to talk and be all friendly like. Sure, I got no problem with that. After a while she joined her friends I spent some time checking out the antiques all over the bar. They had a couple nice IPAs on tap, flat TVs with the games on, and a typical bar type kitchen.

Then across the street is the Riverboat Restaurant which has a bar too. Here’s the thing about that…I went in one night and had dinner at the bar, local fresh caught fish. It was soooo good that I came back the next Friday for the same meal. And the gal that cooked it poured the salt on it. It was barely eatable. Terrible. I asked and it was the same cook…the bartender recognized me and remembered me getting it before. But…Gag.

Next week, I tried the Snake River Grill and had their Idaho Rainbow Trout. Yum. Everything was excellent the two times I went in there.

There’s three different flea markets in this town for some reason. More than I’d expect for a town this size. Also has an elders food pantry. Sort of suggests there’s lots of retired people here. It’s a smaller town and by all appearances doing well with no visible homeless population or even what I’d call a poor section of town. Here and there are some long abandoned homes for sale that didn’t sell in a timely manner but that doesn’t indicate a depressed economy for the area really. And those homes in the area for sale or not are well kept up. I did read an article in the local paper about the city council fining homes with junk in the yards, giving them X days to clean it up or pay the fine so I guess they are working on getting the town cleaned up. And it looks pretty damn good right now, so good job! Since I was touring the town on my bike, I got a street level view of most of the towns neighborhoods and they all look pretty nice. At least now they do. Never been here before so have no idea how it looked just a year ago.

Did some wandering around outside the town just to see what it’s like here…I headed NW along the Snake and stopped here and there to take pictures. Occasionally I’d cross over to the other side and see what’s up that road. Regular tourist stuff. These are all pictures from my Android phone.

And then later I rode my bike just a couple blocks to a tiny city park that displays a camp kitchen wagon and features a commissioned sculpture of the pioneer sheep herders in this area. How different it would have looked back then.  So that’s the end of today’s Hagerman visit. I did stay there a month so got to do a lot around there but also missed several tourist destinations. I’ll probably go back next spring for another visit. I’m itching to take that long rafting trip this time.

Thanks for visiting!

Jim; You know you can return a meal if it’s unedible. Did the cook dislike you for some reason? Was there a “Locals Only” sign in the bar? Glad to hear you had some fish though.

Sure I know. But there was a reason I didn’t return it. The biggest reason was that my mouth got use to it and the taste was just soooooo good, even with the salt. I said ‘Gag’ in my post, and that was true the first few bites but the flavor explosion kept me munching away at it and my mouth adapted to it until there was less then half left…and that was about the time the bartender showed up again. And I was very hungry when it was served. So that’s why I didn’t return it. But I did mention it was way too salty. Cook didn’t even know me, never came out of the kitchen. Bartender (also my server) liked my humor and effervescent personality. I’m a delight after all.

    Any boating? Fishing?

I took that raft trip down the Snake. Nothing beyond that. No fishing though I could have.

Flea markets? Find any good junk worth keeping? Contrary to popular modern trends there seems to be plenty of cassette tapes, cds, and movie dvds. Although pawn shops have a good selection at good prices. Occasionally I’ll transfer my old cassette tape music to .mp3s.

Yes, I found that $100 camera on a flea market shelf mixed in with the crummy ol’ timey cameras so, yeah, good junk.

Riding bike is good exercise. Starting the New Year I’ll be able to attend a gym again. Silver Sneakers program. It’s been 3 years since I visited the gym. And it sure shows. One thing, riding a stationary bike is not as exercising as the real thing. But doable when it rains. This year was the wettest since 1912 or so. 66″ of rain. Another exercise I like is rowing.

Definitely good exercise. If I don’t ride often enough, my knees and hips start to hurt.

We (woman and her brother and wife) visited Longwood Gardens (a Dupont legacy) this last Thursday nite to see the Christmas display. 6:30 p.m. appointment. $27 per senior. Parking was tough when we arrived. Then shuttle bus. It was nice. Temps in the upper 30sF. Prices for refreshments were comparable to fair or airport prices.
Hope you had an enjoyable holiday season.

Oooo, sounds like fun! Ya know, I missed seeing any big displays of xmas lights this year. Recuperating from my surgery sort of stopped my traveling around to see that sort of thing.

    Hola Jim,
Nice that you get around and see so many interesting little things. I’m feeling a bit ‘stagnant’ here in S.F. But not so brave to take off too far on the penninsula myself. If I spoke Spanish, I would feel better about doing that but will wait till hubby gets back.

It’s a fairly stressful trip down the peninsula due to road conditions so, yeah, I’d wait for the hubby to come along with you if you attempt heading for La Paz. It’s pretty and warm down there right now though.

Thanks for advice…yes, you told me last year about the Stop Leak, and I put some in. I guess I’ll try more. I think what’s leaking is a ‘plug’ in the side of the cylinder (used for dual system which I don’t have, so it’s just a plug from what I read). But I can’t seem to tighten or loosen it …won’t budge, need muscle!. Might have to wait till back home. Leak isn’t too bad.

First: Call that HWH guy, tell him about the leak and ask him if it’s OK to remove that plug, if yes: Leverage is your friend. Get a pipe and put on the end of whatever wrench you’re using. Boom, multiplies your puny muscles. Then, get a new clean plastic turkey baster. Suck out as much ATF as you can. Wrench off the plug, put Teflon tape on the threads to stop the leak, and reinstall it. Add new Stop Leak to the tank, then pour in the old ATF (as long as it looks good).

So I hope you have a place to celebrate New Year. I have a ticket for nice dinner at El Pedrino’s again. Probably home by 10.! It got windy again yesterday…and chilly. low 50’s, maybe even 40 something last night. and windy again today. When it dies down I’ll get back to the clearance lights.

Wind stopped here for me today (12-29) so it’ll probably peter out down there soon too. I won’t be doing anything for New Years, unless I decide to sneak over to LV and take in a show. It’s always just been another day to me with the added danger of having to dodge drunks on the road. Haven’t really gone out for NY’s for several decades except when you had to cajole me into meeting you there at Pedrino’s that one time, remember? Doubt if I’ll do anything special this time.

    Safe, Happy New Year!!!

    Back at ya!
